Topic : Tarry To Affect A Change.

Memory Verse :Genesis 32:26. The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have struggled with God and with men, and you have won; so your name will be Israel.”

Bible Reading :Genesis 32:23 GNB. Key Verse : v24.

When the man saw that he was not winning the struggle, he struck Jacob on the hip, and it was thrown out of joint. The man said, “Let me go; daylight is coming.”“I won’t, unless you bless me,” Jacob answered. “What is your name?” the man asked.“Jacob,” he answered.

Jacob had obtained the blessing of his elder brother Esau and ran to live with his uncle Laban at the counsel of his mother Rebecca. Jacob served Laban and got married to his two daughters. God blessed and made him succeed while with Laban. At the right time, God asked Jacob to return to his father’s house with all he had, because the house of Laban had become uncomfortable for him. “Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father. All his wealth has come from what our father owned.” He also saw that Laban was no longer as friendly as he had been earlier. Then the Lord said to him, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives. I will be with you.”” Genesis 31:1-3.

On his way back home, he was afraid of what would happen because of what he did to his brother. Before he fled for his life, Esau was getting ready to terminate his life in rage. Behind him was the unfriendly family of Laban that he was escaping their envious wrath and before him laid the reality of meeting an angry brother. He was desperate therefore for divine intervention. He therefore sent away every one from him, so that he could really spend time alone with God to secure his future in the Spirit. There he engaged God all night in the place of prayer. There he encountered an angel of God’s presence whom he wrestled with all night. That singular encounter changed everything about him as he was ushered into a new realm of favour, fulfillment and covenant walk with God.

The most important lesson of this encounter was his desperation for a change and refusal to take no for answer or have a rescheduled meeting before his matter could be settled. There, the Lord validated his victory before God and with men. This meant that he contacted a new measure of favour of the Lord that caused even supposed enemies to love and and assist him. His meeting with Esau humbled him. God had touched the heart of his brother and restored brotherly love. “But Esau ran to meet him, threw his arms round him, and kissed him. They were both crying. When Esau looked round and saw the women and the children, he asked, “Who are these people with you?”“These, sir, are the children whom God has been good enough to give me,” Jacob answered. Then the concubines came up with their children and bowed down; then Leah and her children came, and last of all Joseph and Rachel came and bowed down. Esau asked, “What about that other group I met? What did that mean?”Jacob answered, “It was to gain your favour.” But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have.”” Genesis 33:4.
