Topic : Pay The Price

Memory Verse:Luke 14:33. In the same way,” concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.

Bible Reading :Luke 14:26-28. GNB. Key Verse: v27.

“Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well. Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples. “If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and work out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job.

The primary reason Jesus came to the earth is save men from condemnation and raise followers unto himself. His mission was to birth himself and the vision of God in such men who follow him, so that after he is gone back to the father as it stands now, such men can continue with the good works he began in the lives of men when he was on earth physically. In the first place we need to understand that Jesus never lived his life to please men, but God. At the beginning of Luke 14, he was a guest in the house of a Pharisee which didn’t go down well with some people. There he taught men of the need to be humble when in public places. On a very important note he told them the parable of the great banquet, which centered on God trying to be on same page with men who took such privileges from the almighty for granted and flooded him with excuses just like the unbelieving Jews. Now he had to throw the gate of grace open to whosoever cares to listen to his call or invitation.

Finally he began to let them know that following him or discipleship always comes at a cost. Because of the cost, it is for men who value keeping a relationship with the Lord. Just like every other relationships we keep on earth, it goes with sacrifices and investments to be cultivated and maintained. Such investment includes our time and resources to get the best of it. In life we have the power of choice, which is key to our long term and short term decisions and preferences. We can decide to live for our own course, the course of other men close to us or that of the kingdom of God. The men in the parable of the great banquet was full of excuses because they loved the world more than they loved the king who gave the banquet and because they didn’t really know the importance of dining with the creator of the universe. If they knew, they will not have any excuses that should keep them away from divine agenda, when the master had given us open invitation and cheque.

Today we must understand that following Jesus is God’s will for every believer. Again, following him is a choice we make on individual basis. You have to make up your mind to invest things you value into your journey of faith. They include your time, endowments and scarce resources. You may also need to sacrifice some relationship that are of less value because they have nothing to offer beyond this present life, especially when their interests run contrary to divine purpose. You must also understand that being in church or church membership doesn’t mean a man is following Jesus. Men who follow him are able to discern his voice and obey when he speaks. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never die. No one can snatch them away from me. What my Father has given me is greater than everything, and no one can snatch them away from the Father’s care.” John 10:26-28.

Prayer :Thank you Lord Jesus for saving my soul. Let your Spirit be at work in me. Help me to pay the price of discipleship with you. Make me a man you can depend on to carry out your good plans in my generation in Jesus precious name…. Amen 🙏🏿.

Yearly Bible Reading : Titus 3:1-11.
