Topic : Repentance, Key To Avoid Divine Judgement.

Memory Verse :1 Samuel 3:17. So Samuel told him everything; he did not keep anything back. Eli said, “He is the Lord; he will do whatever seems best to him.”

Bible Reading : 1 Samuel 3:14-16 GNB. Key Verse : v12.

Samuel stayed in bed until morning; then he got up and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision. Eli called him, “Samuel, my boy!”“Yes, sir,” answered Samuel. “What did the Lord tell you?” Eli asked. “Don’t keep anything from me. God will punish you severely if you don’t tell me everything he said.”

The old testament I have always said is where God revealed his character. Anyone who wants to walk with God must study God’s dealings with men of old. Grace never changed his character, grace and mercy only delays his judgment with hope that we use such window to repent and do what is right before the Lord. As Eli the priest in Shiloh was getting old, his sons Hophni and Phenihas had to help him out in carrying out some of his assignments in the temple. But these sons were not properly trained as they handled the things of God with reckless carelessness. They polluted the place of worship with their greed and immoral lifestyle which was in the open. When their dirty lifestyle was brought to the notice of Eli continously, he didn’t take a firm stand to discipline and correct his sons. That was how he incurred the wrath of God.

In chapter 2 of 1 Samuel, God sent a Prophet to warn Eli because of the behaviour of his sons who were desecrating vthe temple in Shiloh. “A prophet came to Eli with this message from the Lord: “When your ancestor Aaron and his family were slaves of the king of Egypt, I revealed myself to Aaron. From all the tribes of Israel I chose his family to be my priests, to serve at the altar, to burn the incense, and to wear the ephod to consult me. And I gave them the right to keep a share of the sacrifices burnt on the altar. Why, then, do you look with greed at the sacrifices and offerings which I require from my people? Why, Eli, do you honour your sons more than me by letting them fatten themselves on the best parts of all the sacrifices my people offer to me? When your two sons Hophni and Phinehas both die on the same day, this will show you that everything I have said will come true.” 1 Samuel 2:27-29,34. Because the warning wasn’t heeded, God had to send the same message of warning through boy Samuel who was a novice being tutored in the ministry. Samuel 3:10-13.

In all these Eli didn’t stamp his feet firmly on the ground or do enough to correct his sons who were the problem. That made God to wipe him out together with his wayward sons on his day of visitation with judgement. Eli left the Lord to do whatever pleases him in his anger. At the end the entire household was wiped out in a day together with Eli himself. Because God was angry, even the armies of Israel who were not part of the family of Eli suffered heavy defeat and losses in battle for the word of God to be fulfilled. Today we must learn to repent at the rebuke of the Lord. The person the Lord loves as a son, he rebukes we must note. The rebuke of the Lord is to restore his fear where it was lacking and to help us do what is right before him as to avoid divine judgement or destruction. God doesn’t allow his own to be destroyed without warning from different quarters. When we repent from our evil ways at rebuke of the Lord, he will always pardon and withdraw his threath of judgement. “But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Matthew 9:12-13 KJV.
