Bible Reading : 2 Chronicles 32:19-21 GNB. Key Verse: v20.
Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed to God and cried out to him for help. The Lord sent an angel that killed the soldiers and officers of the Assyrian army. So the emperor went back to Assyria disgraced. One day when he was in the temple of his god, some of his sons killed him with their swords. In this way the Lord rescued King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the power of Sennacherib, the emperor of Assyria, and also from their other enemies. He let the people live in peace with all the neighbouring countries.
This time Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against Judah and laid seige over it’s fortified or fenced cities to weaken as to fight the people of God. Now he began to extend his tentacles to Jerusalem the seat of power scheming their fall. Their build up was very intimidating as to inflict the people of God with fear and panic, so that they could overun them. But King Hezekiah of Judah was a man that walked with God and therefore wasn’t afraid of the moves of the enemy. He began to build confidence in his armies by reason of what he knew God could do in order to and deliver his own people from the hands of formidable foes. “The king strengthened the city’s defences by repairing the wall, building towers on it, and building an outer wall. In addition, he repaired the defences built on the land that was filled in on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He also had a large number of spears and shields made. He placed all the men in the city under the command of army officers and ordered them to assemble in the open square at the city gate. He said to them,” 2 Chronicles 32:4-5.
“Be determined and confident, and don’t be afraid of the Assyrian emperor or of the army he is leading. We have more power on our side than he has on his. He has human power, but we have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” The people were encouraged by these words of their king.” 2 Chronicles 32:6-7. Even when the king of Assyria gathered intelligence and discovered that the confidence and strength of Judah rested on their God, he went further to try watering down their resolve, faith and trust in God by trying to compare them with nations that served idols whom they had defeated because they served idols. “When did any of the gods of all those countries ever save their country from us? Then what makes you think that your god can save you? Now don’t let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like that. Don’t believe him! No god of any nation has ever been able to save his people from any Assyrian emperor. So certainly this god of yours can’t save you!”” 2 Chronicles 32:13-14.
Now I want us to observe closely the mind game Sennacherib was trying to play on the people of God, so that he could break down their confidence in God, without which it won’t be easy for him to fight Judah not to talk of defeating them. The Bible says that we shouldn’t be ignorant of the fact that the devil always employ devices to weaken men as to conquer them. He cannot get you except he is able to get you out of the place of your safety tied unshakeable faith in the Lord. He will want you remove your mind from what you know God can do and focus on what himself does as to weaken and wear you out in your inner man. But Hezekiah was smarter and knew also how to take advantage of divine messengers. When he got Isaiah the prophet involved and God took the battle to the place of prayer, God took care of the boaster in evil and wickedness by himself. Now hear the wise one…. “Pay attention to what I say, my child. Listen to my words.
Never let them get away from you. Remember them and keep them in your heart.
They will give life and health to anyone who understands them. Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts .” Proverbs 4:20-23.
Prayer :Thank you Father God because you are most dependable. I rest my faith in what you can do and refuse to be intimidated by the rage of the enemy. Thank you because as I fight my enemies in your presence, you will take care of them and cause them to swallow their pride in Jesus wonderful name….. Amen 🙏🏿.
