Topic :Never Make Idol of Material Blessings

Memory Verse : 1 John 5:21. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. KJV.

Bible Reading :Mark 10:17-19.TPT. Key Verse : v21.

As Jesus started on his way, a man came running up to him. Kneeling down in front of him, he cried out, “Good Teacher, what one thing am I required to do to gain eternal life?” Jesus responded, “Why do you call me good? Only God is truly good. You already know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give a false testimony, do not cheat, and honor your father and mother.’”

This time a very rich man who had admired Jesus Christ and known that he had the keys to eternal life approached him, expressing his admiration for Jesus and opening up on his desire to follow his lifestyle in order to have eternal life. This man didn’t know the implications of his desire as long as God was concerned. Jesus began by telling that the right foundation for anyone to follow him or have eternal life is to keep the commandments which he recounted to him. This particular rich man was very glad to announce to Jesus that he had kept all the commandments of God from his tender age, which meant that he was good to go. Then Jesus being God and therefore knowing all things knew where he had issues that needed to be addressed. This man was a capitalist who loved his possessions more than anything else including God and could do anything within his reach to acquire and keep them, not minding who got hurt.

His possessions was a kind of no go area to him, he made an idol of the material possessions God blessed his efforts with. Jesus knew that as long as his love for materialsm is that high in his life, he will not be able to give God his heart (which is what God desires from us). He therefore advised him to go and sell all those things that he had trusted in, as if his life depends on them, give out the proceeds to the poor, then come back to follow him unto eternal life. Because he wasn’t ready to obey he left disappointed. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 KJV.

Finally Jesus concluded that it will be very difficult, if not impossible for anyone whose heart is tied to material things to make heaven. He didn’t condemn riches and wealth, rather he doesn’t want such to become an idol to us as to take the place of God in our lives. Infact, following Jesus is all about a life of total surrender. Anything in our lives that we can’t give up for the kingdom sake has become an idol to us. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:15-17 KJV.

Prayer :Thank you Father God for the love you have for me that made you sacrifice you son to redeem me. Help me to reciprocate that love. As you bless me, let nothing take your place in my heart. Thank you for helping me follow you unto eternal life in Jesus wonderful name…. Amen 🙏🏿.
