Topic : Live To Obey His Voice.

Memory Verse :1 Samuel 15:20. “I did obey the Lord,” Saul replied. “I went out as he told me to, brought back King Agag, and killed all the Amalekites.

Bible Reading :1 Samuel 15:21-23 GNB. Key Verse : v22.

But my men did not kill the best sheep and cattle that they captured; instead, they brought them here to Gilgal to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God.” Samuel said, “Which does the Lord prefer: obedience or offerings and sacrifices? It is better to obey him than to sacrifice the best sheep to him. Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the Lord’s command, he has rejected you as king.”

King Saul here is a very good example of how a serious minded individual should not take the Lord and his instructions for granted. He was too childish in his dealings with God here. He couldn’t be faithful in carrying out simple instructions given him by the mouth of the Lord. “Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one whom the Lord sent to anoint you king of his people Israel. Now listen to what the Lord Almighty says. He is going to punish the people of Amalek because their ancestors opposed the Israelites when they were coming from Egypt. Go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Don’t leave a thing; kill all the men, women, children, and babies; the cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys.”” 1 Samuel 15:1-3.

King Saul prepared his army and went down to Amelek with a wrong mindset. There he was overtaken by his flesh and it’s desires. He spared the best of animals and brought home king Agag alive when God commanded that nothing and nobody should be spared. Everything in the land was marked by God for destruction. King Saul couldn’t pass the simple test of obedience that would have endered him to be heart of God, established his throne and prepared him for higher assignments and attendant blessings. “Saul defeated the Amalekites, fighting all the way from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt; he captured King Agag of Amalek alive and killed all the people. But Saul and his men spared Agag’s life and did not kill the best sheep and cattle, the best calves and lambs, or anything else that was good; they destroyed only what was useless or worthless.” 1 Samuel 15:7-9.

Even when Samuel confronted him for his, greed and costly mistakes, he was initially insisting that he had obeyed the voice of God. “Samuel went up to Saul, who greeted him, saying, “The Lord bless you, Samuel! I have obeyed the Lord’s command.” Samuel asked, “Why, then, do I hear cattle mooing and sheep bleating?” Saul answered, “My men took them from the Amalekites. They kept the best sheep and cattle to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have destroyed completely.”” 1 Samuel 15:13-15. Today, we must learn to take the instructions of the Lord very seriously in all our dealings and walk with him. We must understand that for every instructions the Lord gives us in any given situation has underlying reasons. In this life we must learn to be content with divine provisions. We don’t need anything God who is the giver of every good gift, has not given to us. Men that walk with God must therefore imbibe the culture of self discipline and contentment. Here king Saul lost the throne because of carelessness , greed, pride, and indiscipline, the Lord took away that he had given him.
