Topic :Time To Return To The Lord.
Memory Verse :Luke 15:17. At last he came to his senses and said, ‘All my father’s hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve!
Bible Reading :Luke 15:18-20 GNB. Key Verse : v20.
I will get up and go to my father and say, Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers.’ So he got up and started back to his father. “He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms round his son, and kissed him.
Jesus told this parable of a rich man who had two sons. The younger son woke up one day and demanded for his inheritance from the father prematurely. The father didn’t want to listen because he knew that this son wasn’t mature enough mentally to manage such inheritance. But because he insisted and kept mounting prrsure on the father, he had to settle him. This son hastened to sell what he received from the father and travelled abroad with the proceeds. There in a foreign land he wasted his inheritance in careless living. “He spent everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over that country, and he was left without a thing. So he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him out to his farm to take care of the pigs. He wished he could fill himself with the bean pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat.” Luke 15:14-16.
This prodigal son became very hungry in a foreign land and had no one to run to. He had to take up a caregiver job in a pigry which couldn’t take care of his feeding, not to talk of other needs. In his acute suffering, he remembered that where he came from, there was more than enough to go round. Even servants who worked under his father had more than enough. At this point, he realised that he had made mistakes and decided to return to the father and plead for forgiveness, so that he could work as a hired servant because he knew that he had failed the father and brought his family shame. But the reception he got from the father back home and the joy and celebration of the father was beyond his expectation.
“‘Father,’ the son said, ‘I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.’ But the father called his servants. ‘Hurry!’ he said. ‘Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’ And so the feasting began.” Luke 15:21-24. There are lessons to learn from this story. The first one is that God is not looking for perfect, but sincere men. The wasteful son wasn’t perfect, bur sincere enough to realise his mistake and acknowledge same. Secondly, he took the right decision to discard shame and return to the father to work as a servant this time. We must always realise and acknowledge our shortcomings when dealing with him who knows all things. On a last note for today, God can never reject a repentant soul. If we return to him in repentance, he will always receive us with joy and give us another chance to correct our mistakes.
Prayer : Thank you Father God because your love can never fail. Today I return to you and acknowledge my shortcomings and unfaithfulness in the things you committed to my care. I return to you in repentance. Help me to do what is right from today in Jesus wonderful name…. Amen 🙏🏿.
Yearly Bible Reading : Acts 23:23-24:27.
