Topic : The Widow And Elisha.
Memory Verse : 2 Kings 4:3. Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.
2 Kings 4:1-2 NIV. Key Verse : v2.
The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”
Here we see a widow whose late husband was a Bible student that owed money before he died. Not only that, he used his two sons as collateral when he was borrowing the money. Now that he died and the wife had nothing to use and pay, the creditor came for her only consolation after she lost her husband in the form of her two sons. Not knowing what to do and whom to run to, she ran to Elisha the main of God for help. The man of God gave her a simple instruction that sounded foolish to ordinary men. When she obeyed, that became the beginning of her turn around testimony. ”Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.” 2 Kings 4:3-6.
The widow humbly obeyed the voice of the servant of God. She didn’t talk to anyone who would have discouraged her, but went about borrowing vessels as much as she could lay hands on with her sons. When the house was filled up, they locked up the house and began to pour to fill the borrowed empty vessels. The flow of oil didn’t stop till the sons confirmed that there was no extra vessel to fill. Now she went back to the man of God to gladly confirm the miracle with him. At this point, the man of God sent her back to go and sell off the stock and return to pay up her debt and live on the excess proceeds of the miracle oil. “She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”” 2 Kings 4:7.
Today we have to learn that no situation we find ourselves in is hopeless or irredeemable before the Lord. When we are in trouble and seem not to know what to do or whom to talk to, the best person to run to in times of distress is the God that can do all things. Elisha was there as a man representing God, her running to him for help was same thing as running to God because God always work through men. Another lesson to learn here is that walking with God sometimes may demand us walking on lonely paths. If the widow her told her friends what she asked to do by Elisha or brought them into the process, they might have inflicted her with doubts and discouragement, which would have kept her at same spot. On a third note, if God must bless a man, the person have to lay hands on something. The man of God asked her, what she had which God can use as a contact point to release her blessing. Thank God she had some little oil the Lord could multiply. Finally, we have to learn that in every labour, there’s increase as contained in the book of proverbs. The man of God sent her to work and birth her debt free life by the help of the almighty.
