Saturday June 8th, 2024.
Topic : Beyond Meeting Needs.
Memory Verse : John 6:41. When the Jews who were hostile to Jesus heard him say, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” they immediately began to complain,
Bible Reading : John 6:25-27. Key Verse : v27.
When they finally found him, they asked him, “Teacher, how did you get here?” Jesus replied, “Let me make this very clear, you came looking for me because I fed you by a miracle, not because you believe in me. Why would you strive for food that is perishable and not be passionate to seek the food of eternal life, which never spoils? I, the Son of Man, am ready to give you what matters most, for God the Father has destined me for this purpose.”
Jesus just fed about five thousand men excluding women and children on the other side. After a hectic day of ministering to the people, he had compassion on the people because they were hungry and there wasn’t any place they could buy food because it was late and he didn’t want to send them home just like that. “Have everyone sit down,” Jesus said to his disciples. So on the vast grassy slope, more than five thousand hungry people sat down. Jesus then took the barley loaves and the fish and gave thanks to God. He then gave it to the disciples to distribute to the people. Miraculously, the food multiplied, with everyone eating as much as they wanted! When everyone was satisfied, Jesus told his disciples, “Now go back and gather up the pieces left over so that nothing will be wasted.” John 6:10-12.
At the end of it all, the people began to contemplate making him king because of the way he is able to meet their needs. He had to find a way out of that place. The next day, they sought after him till they found him. Because he is God and knew their mind, he began to let them know that they were not looking for him for the right reasons. The people was more concerned about what to eat and drink to satisfy their physical body. On the other hand, Jesus had a mission of selling the vision of God’s kingdom to them. He came to restore or build a spiritual man. He had a better food for their spirit man which they didn’t place any value on. The more he tried to sell himself to them as the real thing which is the word of God, the more they misunderstood him. “The truth is,” Jesus said, “Moses didn’t give you the bread of heaven. It’s my Father who offers bread that comes as a dramatic sign from heaven. The bread of God is the One who came out of heaven to give his life to feed the world.” John 6:32-33.
“Then please, sir, give us this bread every day,” they replied. Jesus said to them, “I am the Bread of Life. Come every day to me and you will never be hungry. Believe in me and you will never be thirsty.” John 6:34-35. Jesus is the word of God made flesh or in human form. Many people still make the mistake of going after what he has or can do for them when he is out to give us his entire self. The miracle worker himself is no doubt higher than any miracle we can get from him. When we have him with us or in our lives, ourselves will not need to seek miracles as we become empowered to produce the miracles ourselves anytime there is need because of his Spirit at work in our lives. “And these miracle signs will accompany those who believe: They will drive out demons in the power of my name. They will speak in tongues. They will be supernaturally protected from snakes and from drinking anything poisonous. And they will lay hands on the sick and heal them.” Mark 16:17-18.
