Memory Verse :2 Samuel 9:7. “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
Bible Reading : 2 Samuel 9:1-3 NIV. Key Verse : v3.
David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” “At your service,” he replied. The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”
There are some things about king David that endeared him to the heart of God. He had a very good appreciative heart. Without the help of someone like Jonathan, it would have been difficult for him to be alive to ascend the throne in Israel. King saul was out to stop him from getting to the throne because he saw him as a threat to his son Jonathan becoming king over Israel. “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. “1 Samuel 18:1-3 KJV.
Jonathan was kind to David. He helped him to escape death in the hands of his father saul not minding how it will affect his father’s desire for him to ascend the throne in his stead in Israel. ”Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
1 Samuel 19:1-3.
After the death of king Saul and his son Jonathan, David became king in Israel. When David ascended the throne, he remembered the love and kindness of his late bossom friend Jonathan and wanted to show gratitude by taking care of anyone alive in the house of Saul for Jonathan’s sake. Today we have to learn to be kind to people we meet when we are at vantage position because the tide can always change with time. David rising to the throne in Israel was a divine agenda that nothing would have been able to stop. If Jonathan had refused to be used, God would have raised help for David from another source. The good deeds of Jonathan was a seed that his son Mephiboshet had to reap in due season. “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?” Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.” 2 Samuel 9:7-9.
