Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 15:13. And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
Bible Reading :1 Samuel 15:10-12. Key Verse : v11.
Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
The people of Israel wanted to have a king like other sorounding nations thst could lead them to war against their enemies and God granted their request. Now Saul was anointed king to rule the people of God by Samuel the prophet. Saul did very well at the beginning of his reign. The Lord was with him as he followed divine instructions from the mouth of Samuel whom God placed over him as a Prophet. King Saul never lost any battle before now and his initial success began to enter his head to a point that he began to toy with the instructions of the man of God. He never that the secret of his initial achievements was not all about his physical strength as a man or his military prowess. Because of pride, he thought he knew it better than Samuel.
“Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” 1 Samuel 15:1-3. The instructions of the Lord from the mouth of Samuel was definite and clear. Out of greed, pride and overconfidence, king Saul began to walk by his own imaginations. He went to Amalek and took spoil of the king and every other things that appealed to him. He took that which the Lord had rejected for his people.
“And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.” 1 Samuel 15:8-9. This particular incident marked the beginning of the fall of Saul as king over Israel. Today, we have to learn to guard against greed, pride and overconfidence when we are dealing with God. We need to understand that the key to continuous success and relevance in life and the kingdom is in humbling ourselves before the Lord to obey his voice strictly all the time.
